Quantum Mechanics
QUANTUM MECH
CLASS CODE: PH 433 CREDITS:  3
COLLEGE: PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT: PHYSICS
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: This is a senior-level course which covers an introduction to the theory of quantum mechanics.
TAUGHT: Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Theoretical physics class focusing on the mathematical development of quantum mechanics. Topics to be studied include: Hilbert spaces and operator algebra, including eigenvalues and eigenfunctions; wavefunctions, and time development;and the Schrodinger equation, with elementary applications to topics such as uncertainty relationships, the harmonic oscillator, and tunneling effects.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1.Learn the mathematical tools needed to solve quantum mechanics problems. This will include complex functions and Hilbert spaces, and the theory of operator algebra. Solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations that arise in quantum mechanics will also be studied.
2.Develop problem solving methods that will include mathematical as well as numerical computations and solutions.
3.Build connections between mathematical development and conceptual understanding.
REQUIREMENTS: Homework assignments, exams, and presentations.
PREREQUISITES: PH 279, Math 316 or Math 371
