Introduction to Physics Research

GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Introduces students to the research process in physics. Acquaints students with possible career tracks in physics. Begins or models the senior thesis or internship process.
TAUGHT: Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Careers, opportunities, and major fields of physics. Research in physics, proposal for internship or senior research, introduction to senior research. Applications and preparations for professional positions or further education.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Model the research process in the context of exploring topics and careers in physics. Develop some strategies and resources for doing so. Make proposals for senior thesis and/or internship.
2. Find, evaluate, and complete applications for internships as a preparation or model for internships, job searching, or applications to further education. These may be submitted.
3. Communicate research results with classmates, and other physics majors.
4. Support departmental goals of writing throughout the major courses.
REQUIREMENTS: Lectures, reports and oral presentations, paper and applications, practice interview, proposal/white paper, peer review. May also include exams and quizzes.
PREREQUISITES: PH 220, Math 214 or Math 316, & FDCOM 201
