BEG PHYS LAB
CLASS CODE: PH 150 CREDITS:  1
COLLEGE: PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT: PHYSICS
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Physical Science requirement.

DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the basics of experimental physics. It is designed to help students learn to think analytically and to gain experience in doing common experiments in physics. It teaches students how to analyze data and numerically model common physics problems.
TAUGHT: Fall, Winter, Spring
CONTENT AND TOPICS: This course is intended to give experience in conducting, analyzing and reporting experiments dealing with mechanics. Measurement and uncertainty, error propagation, curve fitting, measurement and modeling of one-and two-dimensional motion and forces.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Develop the following experimental tools: Numerically model simple physical systems using Euler’s method, curve fitting, and error analysis.
2. Experience spreadsheets and simple computer programming in Matlab.
3. Learn to minimize contributing variables and recognize the limitations of equipment.
4. Describe the methodology of science and the relationship between observation and theory.
5. Participate in the methodology by performing laboratory exercises.
6. Discover of physics concepts in other disciplines such as mathematics, computer science, engineering, and chemistry.
7. Analyze physical problems and develop correct solutions using natural laws.
8. Express their knowledge and ideas through oral and written language.
REQUIREMENTS: Participation in laboratory activities, laboratory notebooks, papers, and oral presentations.
PREREQUISITES: Concurrent registration or completion of PH 121.
