| COLLEGE: | PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING | ||
| DEPARTMENT: | PHYSICS | ||
| GENERAL EDUCATION: | This course fulfills a General Education - Physical Science requirement. | ||
| DESCRIPTION: | This laboratory is designed to give the student experience in observing and analyzing basic astronomical phenomena. Students more deeply appreciate how scientists learn information about the stars and planets. | ||
| TAUGHT: | Fall, Winter, Spring | ||
| CONTENT AND TOPICS: | Observational astronomy designed to give the student experience in observing and analyzing basic astronomical phenomena: physical properties of the Sun, Moon, Stars and planets. Basic optics, light and spectroscopy, Milky Way and galaxy properties. | ||
| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: | 1.Use terminology that astronomers use to describe the properties of the stars and planets. 2.Experience the methodology of modern science and relationship between observations and theory. 3.Participate in the methodology by performing laboratory exercises. 4.Repeat some of the most important experiments of astronomy. 5.Discover the strengths and limitations of the scientific process and apply them to own disciplines. 6. Work effectively in group settings with students that have a wide range of intellectual backgrounds. |
