Principles of Physics I
PRIN PHYS I
CLASS CODE: PH 121 CREDITS:  3
COLLEGE: PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT: PHYSICS
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Physical Science requirement.

DESCRIPTION: This course is the first semester of the calculus-based Principles of Physics sequence. The course is designed for students majoring in physics, engineering, chemistry and mathematics. The course centers on mechanics, the study of forces and motion as described through Newton’s three laws of motion and the concept of energy. This area of study is the foundation upon which nearly all science and technology is built. We use Newton’s laws to design cars, airplanes, bridges, etc. Understanding electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and all other areas of Physics (and technology) depends on a firm understanding of the topics presented in this course.
TAUGHT: Fall, Winter, Spring
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Kinematics (One and multi-dimensional), Newton’s Laws of motion, energy, momentum, rotational dynamics.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Develop a conceptual understanding of the fundamental physical principles described above.
2. Recognize the relationship between the conceptual description of nature and its mathematical expression.
3. Develop the mathematical description of these principles that can be used to develop devices, structures, and technologies that are useful for mankind.
4. Use the mathematical description of these principles to develop problem solving skills that will benefit your future career.
REQUIREMENTS: Homework assignments, quizzes, exams, and presentations.
PREREQUISITES: Concurrent registration or completion of Math 112.
OTHER: Math Level: Extensive use of algebra and trigonometry. Introduction to the use of calculus.
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 2009
