GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - no GECode requirement.

DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the science and issues related to energy including; production, conversion, storage, and use, with an emphasis in exploring the role of alternatives sources of energy. Students develop an understanding of energy sources and explore the technical, environmental, social, and economic issues related to the development of energy resources.
TAUGHT: Fall, Winter, Spring
CONTENT AND TOPICS: A. Technical issues relating to energy:
1. Basic principles of work, energy, and power.
2. Scientific and technological issues related to energy transmission, conversion, and storage.
3. Concepts of "energy density" and "footprint".
B. The growing demand for energy:
1. Population growth.
2. Changing needs.
3. Local, national, and world trends.
C. Energy sources and their impacts (economic, environmental, and social):
1. Historical sources of energy.
2. Current primary sources.
3. Adaptations and alternate uses of current primary sources.
4. Alternative and renewable sources.
5. Climate change.
D. Stewardship related issues:
1. Personal energy use.
2. The role of government: promoting energy policy and development of new technologies.
3. Corporate, commercial, and philanthropic organizations.
E. Hands-on experiences (for three credit option), which may include
1. Examining the efficiencies of consumer products (light bulbs, automobiles).
2. Building and/or testing of energy production devices (wind turbine, small gas engine, solar panels).
3. Off campus field expeditions or tours.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the technical issues relating to energy use.
2. Students will develop an understanding of the socio-economic impacts of energy use.
3. Students will gain greater appreciation for their role as stewards of the planet’s resources.
4. Students will demonstrate skills in critical thinking, and communication.
